It’s week 13 of 2025.
Yes, 25% of the year has gone already. Can you believe it?
Time flies when you’re having fun. Hopefully, that’s the case for you.
One of our greatest challenges at work is embracing the awareness gap.
In work—and life—we often become absorbed in what we are doing. We become almost robotic with systems and goals consuming our time and attention.
Often unwittingly, we become complicit in a life of repetition.
Although this might meet our quest for consistency, it can also lead to one of the most dangerous phrases ever spoken.
“We do it this way because we’ve always done it this way.”
The awareness gap relates to what Michael Gerber calls ‘Work ON it, not just IN it’ in his book, the E-Myth.
13 weeks ago, you may have set out with some goals you wanted to do. These are the positive decisions we make to help us improve our lives. But, when did you last pause and reflect on the actions you put in place to achieve those goals?
Have you become so consumed with working IN it, you’ve forgotten to work ON it?
The awareness gap is the space between being tactical and strategic. Your job is to make sure you’re tackling both with equal endeavour.
After all:
Consistency without reflection is a pathway to mediocracy.
Likewise, reflection without action is just a dream.
“Don’t tell me your priorities. Show me your calendar.” — Shane Parrish
If you’re like me, your calendar is more reflective of tasks that show you’re working in something. But, as Shane reminds us with his take on transparency, our calendar should show time for reflection.
Once a week, I sit down and have a business review meeting with myself.
I check all my metrics. I look for peaks and potential troughs. I question the tasks, and the tactics — against my goals. I ask:
You see, when you bridge the awareness gap, you create progress.
Progress takes us forward—not just in motion but also in development.
It’s the journey we want to follow. Movement creates feedback and that gives us the insights we need.
So, with 75% of the year remaining, make sure your calendar has time to help you work ON it, not just IN it.
